I currently live and work in Floyd, Virginia; a colorful, one-stoplight community. My paintings are loosely representational and characterized by use of light, vibrant color, and unique angles of perspective. I begin with a rough outline and work intuitively across the surface; at times painting alla prima and in other places building layer by layer using brushes, scraping, palette knives, fingers, and other improvised tools to convey my idea.
I am inspired by the energy, immensity, and diversity I find when traveling. My work features people, architecture, and the motion of the cities themselves. I’m drawn to subjects utterly focused in their everyday activities, and play upon the contrast between a private moment and the frenetic pace of the city. When painting, I focus on the ephemeral beauty of a single moment; to savor it, enhance it, live it. Each of these paintings represents a specific place and time to me, and I hope my work becomes a window transporting the viewer there.
